Wayside Centre volunteers met this week with Working Centre staff to finalize the plans for transitioning the oversight of Bridgeport Cafe. Starting Tuesday, February 3, volunteers from the Wayside Centre, Christian Reform Church and the broader community will be running the Bridgeport Cafe.
Each day the Cafe is open, from Tuesday to Thursday, there are to be three volunteers:
- The Opener arrives 30-60 minutes before the Cafe opens to prepare or help prepare hot food to be ready at 2:00pm when the Cafe opens. As well, the Opener sets up the tables and chairs and any other things for that day. The opener stays until 3:00pm.
- The Host, is at the Cafe during its hours of operation (2:00pm-4:30pm). The Host leads the programming for the day (e.g. crokinole, cribbage, movie..).
- The Closer is at the Cafe from 3:00pm to 5:00pm and responsible for cleaning up the kitchen, putting out the garbage, putting away the tables chairs and miscellaneous cleanup of the Fellowship Hall.
During the orientation, it will be stressed that the primary role of each of the volunteers is to build relationship and community. During the operation of the Cafe, the Opener and Closer volunteers are encouraged to sit and visit with guests. As well, the volunteers are encouraged to accept help from guests in the operations of the Cafe (e.g. putting away chairs, sweeping).
There are still opportunities to take on one of the volunteer positions or even be available as a spare to fill-in during vacations or illness. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact David Petro.
