The apartment is ready (only a few items still needed) and waiting for our family. It’s absolutely stunning, filled with light and hope.
The homeowners/landlords have given us virtually unlimited access to the apartment, allowing us to clean, drop off donated furnishings and household items, and set it up to be welcoming and ready for the family to move in. We are grateful to them for their patience through all of our comings and goings, surprise donation drop offs, and in general, organized chaos!
A huge thank you to neighbours, Emmanuel, extended families, and friends for your amazing generosity. The amount and quality of the donated items for the apartment are beyond words. If kindness, concern and compassion can be translated into ‘things’, then this family is off to a great start!
And the words ‘thank you’ are not enough to express our gratitude to the dedicated group who worked tirelessly – at all hours of the day/night, finding and collecting items, cleaning the apartment (and by clean I mean SPOTLESS), making it look perfect and you can’t help but smile when looking into the girls’ bedrooms!! So much love and care and welcome and hope has gone into every minute spent making this apartment a home.
We’re overwhelmed by the kindness that has been shown to this family of strangers who are quickly beginning to feel like family.
The Canadian government met it target of 25,000 Syrian refugees to arrive in Canada by February 29, 2016. Changes to the sponsorship program have been/are being made and we’ve learned that any part of the process can change without notice.
The most recent information that we have received states that it is the priority of the govn’t to reduce the backlog of cases in the overseas Visa offices. Processing these applications will be a priority. Applications submitted before February 29th will most likely result in people arriving in Canada in 2016. We are told that this process should take an average of 3 months (I’m not sure what I think about this projected timeline)
This is good news for us … our application was officially submitted/accepted on Feb 9. We are able to check the status of the application and information is updated everyTuesday. Our family is still waiting to be contacted for their interview.
