White Gift Sunday, Dec 10
Giving gifts for others, wrapped in white paper, is a tradition on White Gift Sunday. White paper is used so that no one gift stands out because of its fancy wrapping. Families give what they are able.
Our white gifts this year will be supporting several programs:
Gifts of money will go to the United Church Mission and Service fund. We pledged $20,500 for the year. Please help us meet this goal.
The Mitten Tree, outside the Fellowship Hall, contains tags asking for a gift for a child or adult. Please choose a tag, buy a gift and bring the gift with you on White Gift Sunday. Please tape the tag to your gift.
The gifts for adults will be given to The Waterloo Wayside Centre’s Sharewear. Sharewear is a program here at Emmanuel where people in need can “shop” for new and gently used clothing. The greatest need is for underwear (including long johns) and jeans (slightly used or new). Adult hats, gloves and scarves placed on the Mitten Tree are also given to Sharewear.
The children’s gifts go to the Children’s Needs Distribution Centre (CNDC). This program is operated by Highland Baptist Church. Its focus is on children and has been serving financially needy families since 1993 by providing children’s clothing and toys. Families in need are referred to the CNDC by local service agencies and parents make an appointment and come to the centre to choose one gift for each of their children. Some ideas for white gifts: dolls, trucks, Lego are good for the middle years, crafts and games are good for the older children. Toys requiring batteries are not a good idea. Also remember that many parents do not read English.
Child size mittens, hats and scarves placed on the Mitten Tree will be donated to the CNDC.
Your generosity can make a difference in peoples lives this Christmas Season.
